Petr eyes momentum during quick-fire season finale

The most intense period in Petr Ptacek’s 2020 Formula Renault Eurocup campaign gets underway at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium this weekend with the first of four back-to-back race events.

The iconic home of the Belgian Grand Prix constitutes the seventh round of the season and will be followed by consecutive, quick-fire events at Imola in Italy, Hockenheim in Germany and Le Castellet in France.

“I love racing and continuity is always a good thing for a driver,” Petr explained. “Sure, it’s going to be a busy few weeks but that’s the pressure I like.

“If you can have a successful weekend in the first couple of races, it can give you nice momentum for the next six. That’s what I’m hoping for.”

Petr has reset after a disappointing couple of races at the Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya last time out, and celebrating his 18th birthday with friends and family last week has been an enjoyable distraction for the Sauber Academy member.

But this weekend’s action at Spa marks a return to the R-ace GP cockpit and Petr’s focused on delivering a strong performance across both qualifying sessions and races on the undulating 7.004km Belgian circuit.

“Spain was frustrating but I’ve moved on and I’m determined to keep pushing and improving in whatever way I can,” he explained.

“Coming to Spa is good for me because it’s a track that I like quite a lot. I’ve only driven here once before but that experience taught me how to manage a lap because the circuit is so long.”

Racing at Spa-Francorchamps in October can throw up a mixed bag of weather conditions in the Ardennes Forest. But Petr is fazed by that.

“I’m sure the weather will make things tricky but my pace was pretty good at Zandvoort when we had wet, damp and dry track conditions,” he added.

The Formula Renault Eurocup will run on the same programme as the iconic 24 Hours of Spa this weekend.

That means Petr’s first qualifying session will start at 16.25 on Thursday, before second qualifying at 10.40 and Race 1 at 14.25 on Friday. Race 2 will start at 10.45 on Saturday morning (times are CET).
