Petr confirms Formula Renault return in 2020

Rising star Petr Ptacek will race in the Formula Renault Eurocup with the championship-winning R-ace GP squad during 2020.

The Czech driver scored a pair of podium finishes in the competitive single-seater series last season and has been keen to put that experience to good use by returning to mount a title charge in 2020.

In joining the French R-ace GP squad, Petr will be racing in a team that has a distinguished record in the Formula Renault Eurocup, having won the Teams’ and Drivers’ championship titles for the last two seasons.

The 17-year-old, who counts MindMaze and Parmigiani Fleurier among his supporters, is justifiably excited for the 10-round season that lies ahead.

He said: “I really can’t wait for the racing to start. The objective is to win the championship this season and I’ll be pushing for that with full passion and determination.

“I’m fully aware that it will be a tough year of racing but I feel I have a good understanding of the car and I have grown a lot, mentally, as a driver in the last 12 months. I feel ready to step up and to try and deliver against my target.”

Petr will go into the 2020 season on the back of a strong Toyota Racing Series campaign in New Zealand during January and February. Driving the same specification Tatuus chassis that is used in the Formula Renault Eurocup, the youngster impressed as he finished P5 (out of 21 drivers) in the final points standings.

Petr’s New Zealand racing programme also gave him the valuable opportunity to work with the R-ace GP engineer that will look after his Formula Renault Eurocup car in 2020.

“It was a very useful opportunity for me and R-ace GP to start our relationship early and to get to know each other’s work ethic,” he explained. “It was handy to see each other in both the good and the difficult moments. The fact that we already have a strong understanding going into the new season will be an advantage.”

With the first round of the season pushed back until 8-10 May at Silverstone in the UK, Petr has embarked on an intensive testing programme to ensure he is ready for the start of his 10-round racing campaign.

He said: “We hope to do a lot of laps as part of the official championship tests and to try a lot of different things with the car. This will enable us to gather lots of information and data that we can then use to check what is best for us when the first race goes green.”
